These startups focus on creating unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) designed to efficiently transport supplies, equipment and personnel in challenging and dynamic environments.
1
Grid Aero
Country: USA | Funding: $31.6M
Grid Aero develops and manufactures autonomous cargo drones for long-range flights. Its Lifter aircraft is capable of carrying thousands of kilograms of cargo over thousands of kilometers. Combining ultra-simple and low-cost designs with advanced autonomous systems, it can reliably operate in remote or hostile environments, where infrastructure is limited or military operations are taking place. Furthermore, the loss of such a drone does not incur significant losses. Grid's autonomous control system combines classic control systems with modern AI, enabling aircraft to operate intelligently over long distances. It learns from other aircraft in the Grid network and minimizes the need for human oversight. Lifter aircraft operate as a fault-tolerant distributed network. With seamless fleet-wide control, a small ground team can manage dozens of aircraft over vast regions.
2
Poseidon Aerospace
Country: USA | Funding: $12.5M
Poseidon Aerospace develops autonomous sea-based aircraft designed to transport cargo using ground effect flight.
3
Joby Aviation
Country: USA | Funding: $2.7B
Joby Aviation creates electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for civil and military applications. The company is collaborating with the U.S. Department of Defense and developing a specialized autonomous hybrid aircraft for military use in partnership with L3Harris. The Joby aircraft is powered by six electric motors and features low noise emissions. It is designed to meet the safety standards of the FAA and other international aviation regulators. Its flight can be controlled by an operator from a ground station. The company is also leveraging its existing eVTOL technology and autonomous takeoff and landing system, known as Superpilot, for potential defense applications, such as surveillance, reconnaissance and logistics missions. Specifically, it has been tested to control a Cessna Caravan 208 platform for rapid cargo delivery, hub-and-spoke logistics and inter-island transport.
